Wesley Update (1.20.13)

What’s going on at Wesley??

It’s been a while since our last update due to recent changes going on with Wesley. We have had a major change in leadership, a new team for fundraising, and new students.

Leadership changes
Officials at the NM Conference Office decided over the summer to try to start a new Wesley Board focused on fundraising so that as the conference phases out funding for campus ministry there will still be a funding source for Wesley Foundation. Wesley began the Fall without any campus minister or director leadership, but the students have very capably led the ministry.
Several of the students met with Rodney Saunders on Nov. 8, and he is now the new campus minister for Wesley Foundation. With 15 years of campus ministry experience at SUNY Buffalo and Kansas State, and with three years service on the National Committee for Campus Ministry as a South Central Jurisdictional elected representative, he brings sincere interest and many ideas to help the students lead the ministry.  He is three/quarter time pastor at University Heights UMC, and will now serve at least a quarter time with Wesley.   He is doing this not for any pay but for love of campus ministry, and he is not here on his way to anywhere else as he plans to stay as long as the church will have him, so he brings stability to the campus ministry position.
Bible Study
This past semester we have been focusing on a book called “Studies on the Go” and will continue with the same series this semester. The book has bible studies planned out so that the students can pick a topic and lead without any previous preparation.

Prayer Box
Wesley is still doing Prayer Box every Friday in the SUB from 11:30 – 3:00. We have received very positive feedback from the students on campus for this event. We have opened this up for other ministries to join us.

Thanksgiving Dinner
On November 20th, we had out annual Wesley Thanksgiving dinner. It was held at University Heights, which had a large enough kitchen and dining room to accommodate everyone.

Volunteer Work/Clothing Drive
On November 27th, Brett R. represented Wesley and volunteered at Project Share. For this semester, the students are also holding a clothing drive to donate to Joy Junction at the end of the semester. We received a generous donation from someone who happened to be on campus and had to donate the clothes before the end of the semester. We will continue collecting through finals and donated the clothes.

Strengthening relationships with other ministries
This semester we have been trying to strengthen our relationships with other ministries on campus. We have been more involved with the Aquinas Newman Center as well as the Canterbury Ministries.

Mission Trip
This year, Wesley will be having our Mission trip in New Orleans and will be working with the Epworth Project.

For the Love of Wesley Dinner
This year, Wesley is having another “For the Love of Wesley” dinner on February 16th at St. John’s UMC. The cost is $15 per person and $25 for couple.

Wesley Grief Support
Starting on Monday, January 28th, Wesley will start a Grief Support Group. It will take place every Monday at 7:30 PM in the SUB Luminaria. We will be using “Beyond the Broken Heart” by Julie Yarbough.
